Artist’s Note
Existence is inscribed within us only as deeply as its gyeol.
Human beings are not born complete. Through time, relationships, and memories, we are continually becoming who we are. The time we have lived does not disappear; it leaves traces within our existence. I call these traces gyeol.
The name Dagyeol refers to a state in which countless layers of gyeol have accumulated. Gyeol is not a pattern that fixes a person into a single form. Rather, it is the trace of how we gradually change, deepen, and become freer as we pass through life. Existence is not defined by a single essence, but formed through the layers of time we have lived.
Through color and material, I reveal the invisible gyeol of existence. Color does not exist on its own. The same color acquires a different depth and movement on canvas and on fabric. Only when color encounters material does it gain its own distinct gyeol.
Canvas captures flowing color and time, holding them within a single moment. Fabric places color upon the body, allowing it to move, fold, and wear with time. If painting is gyeol that is left behind, fashion is gyeol that is worn. Though the two mediums take different forms, they belong to one body of work, as both explore the process through which existence is shaped over time.
Seen closely, each gyeol holds a different time and memory. From a distance, however, all these traces connect to form a single existence.
I do not define existence as a completed form. I simply follow the colors and gyeol left by the time that has been lived. My work is the act of discovering, accumulating, and revealing those traces anew.
